Social Awareness
I often recommend a book to my clients whose title represents the epitome of social awareness: “The Outward Mindset: Seeing beyond ourselves” by the Arbinger Institute.
The book’s message is simple: by making more of an effort to understand and empathize with other peoples’ objectives, needs, challenges, and lived experiences, we can connect more deeply.
Social awareness enables us to form stronger working relationships that can weather the ups and downs of today’s business climate, improving our social and emotional wellbeing. It increases our ability to interpret events effectively as well as to recognize the emotions of others. Social awareness also increases our ability to understand and change our perspective to include other people’s feelings, empathize, and act accordingly.
A great way to start building social awareness is to ask more questions and improve your listening skills. What are some things that you have done to get better at becoming socially aware?
